The Lunar New Year marks the arrival of a new lunar calendar and is one of the most important holidays celebrated throughout East and Southeast Asia. The Year of the Rat will officially start on January 25th, and Victoria offers an exciting schedule of events to usher in the Lunar New Year! Get ready for parades, live entertainment and specially prepared meals in the province’s capital.

Chinese New Year Celebrations

Did you know that Victoria’s Chinatown is the oldest in Canada and the second oldest in all of North America? On January 26th, celebrate Chinese New Year in this historic neighbourhood filled with an eclectic mix of galleries, shops, cafes, herbal boutiques, noodle bars, and a Buddhist temple. The Wong Sheung Kung Fu Club will be organizing the Lion's Dance parade and a Kung Fu demonstration. Watch the three dormant lions being awakened from their slumber in an eye dotting ceremony. The festivities will take place at the opulent Gates of Harmonious Interest at the entrance to Chinatown. The parade will proceed rain or shine.

Spring Festival Spectacular

The Ocean Rain Arts Academy is an education centre in Victoria that offers tutoring services and arts and dance programs for school-aged children. On January 31st the academy will be hosting the Spring Festival Spectacular, a family-friendly arts showcase featuring live performances from Ballet Etoile Canada, students of the academy, musicians, magicians, and other talented local performers drawn from Philippine, Japanese and Korean communities. Visit the Eventbrite page for more details.

Chinese New Year Fundraising Dinner

If there’s one universal feature of holiday celebrations around the globe, it’s food! Celebrate the transition to a new year with a delicious eight-course Chinese dinner at the Golden City Restaurant. In addition to an authentic Chinese New Year meal, there will be a live and silent auction and a raffle basket. Proceeds from the event will go toward the Victoria Chinatown Lioness club.
